Curriculum Vision
At the heart of our curriculum is our firm belief that its fundamental purpose is to develop our learners as happy, confident and successful human beings who know their learning has prepared them for whatever lies ahead. We have worked hard with parents, students and the wider Filey community to create a curriculum that broadens horizons for our young people whilst helping them understand the significance of their own culture and place within it.
Our ambitious curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity. We want our young people to question their world, their culture, their heritage… and their learning! Across our curriculum, we prioritise reading and privilege thinking, providing as many opportunities for our young people to challenge their own and others’ ideas as possible. We do this because we believe that questioning helps us to move beyond the confines of personal experience and deepens critical thinking; it makes us better people and creates new opportunities.
The curriculum we deliver is knowledge-rich and sequentially structured to reflect our belief that learning is not merely the process acquiring new knowledge but is more accurately determined as a change in long term memory. We aim to provide memorable and challenging learning experiences for each of our students, irrespective of their starting points or individual needs. Students’ prior learning is further developed over a period of five years through our broad and balanced curriculum provision. Learning is sequenced so that it encourages students to reflect and gradually build upon learning experiences to progress.
At KS3, our students study the core subjects of English, Maths and Science alongside a wide range of non-core subjects. After three years, students enter ‘KS4 and are supported to specialise in four subjects of their choice, including at least one of History or Geography in addition to continuing to study the core subjects. We offer a wide range of academic and vocational subjects for students to choose from and support students to select the options they are most excited about.
We strongly believe that students should study a broad and balanced curriculum that places equal importance on developing the knowledge and skills required to keep safe and healthy and to prepare for life and work in modern Britain. Our curriculum therefore includes a personal development and tutor programme encompassing moral, spiritual, emotional and physical development. It helps students to understand and successfully cope with some of the most important issues to face young people today, including mental health, staying safe online, healthy and safe relationships, challenging extreme views and developing the skills and attributes required to negotiate the labour market.
We are proud to offer an expanding selection of enrichment opportunities for our young people during social times and after school, some of which include: football, athletics, table-tennis, chess, drafts and dominoes, book club and, for year 11, a Period 6 revision programme. We are continually seeking to grow our enrichment activities so please do get in touch for a comprehensive list.
