Careers Education, Information and Guidance at Filey School
Filey School is committed to providing our students with a planned programme of activities to equip them with the necessary information and experiences to help them make appropriate choices with regards to future study and employment.
This policy statement sets out the school’s arrangements for managing the access of providers to students at the school for the purpose of giving them information about the providers education or training offer. This complies with the schools’ legal obligations under Section 42B of the Education Act 1997. The offer also complies with the Provider Access Legislation (January 2023) which strengthens and supports the Baker Clause (2017).
All students in Year 8 – 11 are entitled:
Following the publication of the DFE Statutory Careers Guidance (updated January 2023), we have worked with partners in HE, FE, North Yorkshire Business and Education Partnership, Bourne Leisure (Haven), York St John ‘Making Waves’ programme, Inspiring Choices and Young Enterprise Company Programme to further improve and broaden the range of experiences available to our students. We are continually looking to expand this and in 2024-25 we are particularly focusing on additional opportunities linked to STEM.
Outlined below, is our current careers programme, which shows the opportunities and experiences provided for our students in each academic year and term. In addition to the programme outlined below, CEIAG is also delivered as part of the Life programme by form tutors and also in Life Lessons and assemblies. From September 2024, the School’s designated Careers Leader is Mrs Rowland. Our statutory duty to give independent and impartial careers advice is provided by Careers Adviser, Miss Garton.

We know that making decisions for future study after Year 11 is very important and that there are many pathways to consider. Throughout their time at Filey School, we have provided students with careers education to enable them to ensure that they choose the most appropriate route to take in September 2025. It is compulsory that all students are in some form of education, training or work-related learning until their 18th birthday. In order to support students and parents with these important decisions, we have collated below information about different further education providers, supporting resources and events that are taking place.
Careers Guidance Interviews
All year 11 students are guaranteed an individual careers guidance interview with Miss Garton, our Careers Advisor. Many of these interviews have already taken place; however, Miss Garton is continuing these interviews with students who have not yet received one or where there are actions to follow-up. An individual careers action plan is produced after the interview and shared with home. We would like to support you and your child as much as possible to ensure that they make the right decision for post-16 study.
Mock Interviews
We will be holding mock interviews in school on the afternoon of Monday 11th November. Each student will be provided with the opportunity to have a one-to-one meeting with an employer or an individual from the workplace. These will involve students sharing the CV which they have produced in the Life lessons and form time and will allow students to gain invaluable experience and advice in relation to transferrable skills. Students are invited to attend for the day wearing appropriate business attire; alternatively, school uniform will be expected as usual.

https://www.careerpilot.org.uk/ provides further information on exploring options and planning next steps. During this academic year we will invite local post 16 providers to visit Filey and speak to our year 11 students. This will help support students in making decisions. Our intention is to have all post 16 applications completed by February 2025.
Schools are required to ensure that there is an opportunity for a range of education and training providers to access students in years 8 to 11 for the purposes of informing them about approved technical education, qualifications or apprenticeships. Schools must have a policy statement that outlines the circumstances in which education and training providers will be given access to these students.
This is outlined in section 42B of the Education Act 1997.
This policy statement shows how our school complies with these requirements.
A number of events, integrated into our careers programme and including parents’ evenings will offer providers an opportunity to come into school to speak to students and/or their parents/carers. Please speak to Jo Rowland to identify the most suitable opportunity for you.
Our safeguarding/child protection policy outlines the school’s procedure for checking the identity and suitability of visitors. Education and training providers will be expected to adhere to this policy.
Learning spaces such as the hall and classrooms, which include access to technology, screens and audio facilities can be made available on request.
In the first instance, please contact Jo Rowland (see contact details above) to discuss your requirements.
Providers are welcome to leave at reception prospectuses or other material for students to read.
A provider wishing to request access should contact: Jo Rowland, Careers Leader. Telephone: 01723 512354 Email: j.rowland@fi.coastandvale.academy
