Early Reading and Phonics
We are a “Get Reading. Keep Reading. Change Everything.” school.
We believe in the transformational power of reading. We know that for our children reading is the gateway to the world around them and the wider curriculum.
Reading gives children the opportunity to use their imagination to explore new ideas, visit new places and meet new characters. It helps them to understand their own identity, and gives them an insight into the world and the views of others.
We want our children to become lifelong readers, regardless of their starting point or year of entry so that they have the best chance of future academic success. We also believe that reading improves children’s well-being and empathy.
In order to achieve this, we have put reading at the heart of our curriculum and all that we do. We know that we must provide children not only with a robust phonics programme but also a rich and diverse wider reading offer.
From the moment children arrive at our school they are immersed in a range of rich and diverse reading experiences with high quality texts chosen specifically with our school community and curriculum in mind. We have planned a reading curriculum that is bespoke to our school paying particular attention to the teaching of vocabulary and developing comprehension skills.
Phonics
All teachers have the highest expectation that children will become confident, proficient readers by the end of Key Stage 1 through our consistent implementation of our chosen Systematic Synthetic Phonics (SSP) Programme Read Write Inc:
