Health and Social Care

BTEC Health and Social Care 

When studying for the Level 2 BTEC Health and Social Care students develop sector-specific knowledge and skills in an engaging learning environment. There is a significant amount of practical work where students will be expected to carry out research and produce a portfolio of evidence for their internally assessed units. Throughout the course students focus on four areas of equal importance which cover; the development of key skills in health and social care such as interpreting data to assess an individual’s health, processes that underpin effective ways of working in health and social care, such as designing a plan to improve an individual’s health and wellbeing, attitudes that are considered most important in health and social care, including the care values that are vitally important in the sector, the opportunity to practise applying them, and knowledge that underpins effective use of skills, process and attitudes in the sector such as human growth and development, health and social care services, and factors affecting people’s health and wellbeing.


Students study 3 components: 

Component 1: Human Lifespan Development - students learn about human growth and development throughout the life stages and the factors that affect it. They will gain an understanding of a range of predictable and unpredictable life events, and how individuals deal with them. 

Component 2: Health and Social Care Services and Values – students will learn about a range of health and social care services and the barriers to access service users may face. They will gain an understanding of the skills, qualities and values required when working in the caring professions. 

Component 3: Health and Wellbeing - students will examine a range of factors that affect health and wellbeing, both positively and negatively. They will learn how to interpret health indicators such as blood pressure, peak flow and BMI, and examine the impact of lifestyle choices on physical health. They will make suggestions to improve the health and well-being of individuals and identify obstacles that may occur.

Level 3 BTEC Health and Social Care

This course is for learners who are interested in learning about the health and social care sector and supports access to a range of higher education courses possibly, but not exclusively, in health and social care. The nature of the course is that theoretical learning is applied to case studies and individuals from a diverse range of backgrounds and with a range of health and social care needs. The qualification incorporates topics relevant across the health and social care sector: 

  • Human Lifespan Development – Students learn about patterns physical, intellectual, emotional and social growth and development throughout each of the life stages. They will examine concepts such as fine and gross motor skills, bonding and attachment, esteem, and a range of factors that impact on growth and development. 
  • Working in Health and Social Care – This unit introduces students to a range of roles and organisations in the health and social care sector and the responsibilities they have to meet the needs of their service users. Students will examine a range of concepts, legislation and working practices including anti-discrimination, and health and safety and the regulation of health and social care services. They will be required to apply this learning to people with specific needs. 
  • Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs – Students are required to produce a portfolio based on case studies explaining how the needs of the individuals are met by health and social care services. They will apply concepts including equality and diversity, empathy and trust, ethical issues, communication, and confidentiality to evaluate the effectiveness of the care they receive. 
  • Physiological Disorders and their Care – Students examine two physiological disorders, the cause and effects of each disorder and their diagnosis and treatment. Students create a portfolio which includes a write up of their research and an individual treatment plan for one of the disorders. Students will examine a range of treatment and support including, surgery, rehabilitation and complementary therapies.
