Outdoor Education

Lady Lumley’s School is unique in its offering of outdoor education. Many of our staff are qualified outdoor instructors, offering a wide range of activities, including canoeing/kayaking, climbing, mountain walking, expeditions, mountain biking, orienteering and more! We have an impressive fleet of outdoor education equipment, including 2 climbing walls, canoes/kayaks, mountain bikes and full expedition equipment. This combination of staff and infrastructure allows us to offer some of the best outdoor education opportunities around.

Key stage 3

All our key stage 3 students can join our weekly outdoor education club. This club gives students the opportunity to develop their skills in our many outdoor activities. In the darker, winter months, we focus on our indoor climbing skills. Climbing is also taught in lessons as part of the PE curriculum. Year 8 students take part in a summer outdoor education camp in the North York Moors, where they experience a variety of outdoor activities and get to grips with nature. Year 9 students experience a winter Leadership and futures residential at Peat Rigg, This residential will equip them with valuable leadership skills and prepare them for making their option choices in Year 9.

Key stage 4

At key stage 4 the focus is on the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme. We have one of the most diverse and successful DofE units around and many of our students go on to complete the prestigious Gold Award. In Year 10, students begin the Bronze Award and are guided through the process by our experienced staff. They have a winter skills weekend, which teaches valuable expedition skills and they then complete their expedition in the summer of Year 10. Many students carry on to the Silver Award in Year 11.

Key stage 5

Sixth form students have the opportunity to start the Gold DofE Award during their Wednesday afternoon enrichment sessions. They currently complete their Gold expedition by open canoe and a lot of their enrichment time is spent preparing them for the canoeing expedition. In the future we hope to see a return to overseas expeditions. In the past we have visited Borneo, Iceland and the Himalayas.
