Curriculum

Our Life curriculum provision gives due regard to the DfE’s statutory guidance on sex and relationship education as well as focusing in more detail on issues most relevant to pupils in our local context. Specific needs, as they arise are responded to and incorporated into our planning. We are keen to use parental surveys to ensure that contextual issues are quickly addressed.   Our 5-year Life learning journey shows how RSE content is mapped across year groups and curriculum subject areas to ensure full coverage. Life curriculum content is sequenced to ensure that key issues are revisited in later years and in greater depth.

So that we can prepare our pupils for Life in modern Britain we ensure that our Life curriculum reflects the full diversity of the world we live in. This includes teaching about people who are LGBTQIA+ and themes. We further support this through sessions, assemblies In Life Lessons, students learn about sexual orientation and gender identity, same-sex relationships, sexism, misogyny, homophobia, and gender stereotypes.

Personal Development

We believe that students deserve a broad and ambitious Personal Development curriculum, rich in skills, experiences and knowledge, which ignites curiosity and prepares them well for future learning and employment as citizens within wider society. Our Personal Development curriculum will give students the opportunity to:

  • Enhance students reading ability through a Mentor Reading Programme of carefully chosen texts to support reciprocal reading;
  • Enjoy a wide range of opportunities to explore ethics, philosophy, economic wellbeing in relation to modern life through Life lessons and the wider curriculum offer.

  • Experience learning that is ‘outside the academic’ throughout an ambitious CEAIG offer throughout the year;
  • Produce ‘meaningful work’ of which they can be proud;
  • Articulate and express their ideas, views and opinions about a wide range of topics clearly, confidently and respectfully;
  • Develop their character, including resilience, confidence and independence, so that they contribute positively to the life of the school, their local community and the wider environment.

Religious Studies

At Scalby School, religious studies make an important contribution to the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of our pupils, supporting their understanding of their wider community and the world that they live in. Throughout KS3 and KS4, pupils access a broad range of topics and themes which are chosen to encourage critical thought, openminded attitudes and an understanding of others’ thoughts regardless of their religious beliefs, ethnicity, or individual circumstances. The programme of study encourages empathetic communication, appraisal of other beliefs and social awareness and is delivered as part of our Life programme.
