Modern Foreign Languages

Bonjour tout le monde!

Pupils at Newby and Scalby Primary School learn French in Key Stage 2 through the comprehensive and progressive ‘Language Angels’ scheme from Year Three onwards.

Learning a foreign language provides an opening to other cultures. It promotes children’s curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world.

Our aim is to ensure that children develop a good basic understanding and a love of French. We hope to give them the foundations for further foreign language learning at Key Stage 3 and beyond.

We enable our pupils to express their ideas in French using the four key language learning skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Pupils are taught all necessary phonics, grammar and vocabulary progressively across the primary phase. This enables our pupils to use and apply their learning in a variety of contexts, laying down solid foundations for future language learning. We also use songs, videos, games, books, stories and interactive activities to support and engage them.
