Spring Term in EYFS
Wow, what a busy term it has been in EYFS! We started off the term by learning about the signs of Winter and were lucky to have lots of snow and ice to explore. We walked around the school grounds to spot the signs of Winter. We also learnt how to use powder paint effectively and created Winter inspired art work.
We have been refining our junk modelling skills and were inspired to make models after looking at the books ‘I am not a toilet roll’ and ‘I am not a cereal box’. The children made some wonderful creations whilst learning how to attach materials using PVA glue.
We took part in RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch. The children quickly noticed that we didn’t have many birds visiting our playground so made bird feeders to make it more appealing. We also found out that we needed to be quiet whilst observing them.
The focus for this Spring 2 term has been ‘The Community’. We found out that Scarborough is a town and that there are many places in Scarborough that are special to different people. We also found out that many people in the community help us. Thank you to Mr Adams (a surgeon), Miss Hodgson (a community nurse), Mrs Balf (a speech and language therapist) and Mrs Welford (a midwife) that visited us to speak to the children about their role in the community. This was inspiring for the children. In response to this we set up a doctor’s roleplay area which the children have thoroughly enjoyed.
We’ve also found out about Scarborough’s tradition of ‘skipping day’. The children have recently challenged themselves to skip and jump in various ways, including over hurdles and with a skipping rope. Many children persevered for several days to perfect this key gross motor skill.
We concluded our community topic by looking at different maps and learning key vocabulary such as key, route, map, and journey. A few days later the class puppet, Stickman, went missing. We received photos to show us that he had been on a journey around Scarborough! Luckily the children used their new knowledge to create maps and posters to try and locate him.
Next half term we will start our new topic ‘Growing’. We can’t wait to share some more photos and information with you.
