Life
Curriculum
Our Life curriculum provision gives due regard to the DfE’s statutory guidance on sex and relationship education as well as focusing in more detail on issues most relevant to pupils in our local context. Specific needs, as they arise, are responded to and incorporated into our planning. Our Life learning journey shows how RSE content is mapped across year groups and curriculum subject areas to ensure full coverage. Life curriculum content is sequenced to ensure that key issues are revisited in later years and in greater depth.
So that we can prepare our pupils for Life in modern Britain we ensure that our Life curriculum reflects the full diversity of the world we live in. This includes teaching about people who are LGBTQIA+ and themes. We further support this through form time sessions and assemblies. Students learn about sexual orientation and gender identity, same-sex relationships, sexism, misogyny, homophobia, and gender stereotypes.

Parental right to withdrawal from Religious Education
(Parental right to withdrawal from Religious Education) was first granted when religious education was religious instruction and carried with it the connotation of induction into the Christian faith. RE has been very different from this for some time. It is inclusive and wide-ranging, exploring a range of religious and non-religious worldviews. However, in the UK, parents still have the right to withdraw their children from RE on the grounds that they wish to provide their own religious education. (School Standards and Framework Act 1998 S71 (3)). This will be the parents’ responsibility. However, it is good practice to talk to parents to ensure that they understand the aims and value of RE before honouring this right. Students aged 18 or over have the right to withdraw themselves from RE.
If parents are considering withdrawal, we ask that they contact Mrs J. Rowland in writing. These contact details are j.rowland@fi.coastandvale.academy. Parents will be offered the opportunity to discuss and view the content of the programme or resources used in the delivery of Religious Education, which is part of our Life curriculum.
